Durable Local Economy

In the past, conservation strategies were often viewed by some as obstacles to a flourishing economy. Today, there is a better understanding that true and lasting community vitality can best be achieved by promoting local economic development and partnerships that support conservation of significant lands and waters. Everyone benefits when thriving economies and thriving ecosystems are recognized as mutually supportive goals. Throughout Monterey County there is now the opportunity for powerful collaborative decision-making. We find ourselves at a critical juncture, when all of us with a stake in the health of our communities—the agriculture, fishing, ranching and hospitality industries, local chambers of commerce, affordable housing developers, conservation groups, and social service and social change organizations—can roll up our collective sleeves and develop programs in support of the economic, social, cultural and environmental goals of the region.

For example, food production is an essential ingredient of our local economy, and we must work to keep options open for those who make a living from the land and water. Through partnerships and expanded networks such as the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, local food producers and small family farms can achieve significant brand and income appreciation through creative marketing and product development strategies. Ranchers can protect their quality of life while protecting iconic landscapes through conservation easements. And all citizens can benefit from community development that uses pedestrian-oriented designs and includes access to expanded public transportation.
