Social Networking on BSLT Trails
When you invite your friends and family to join you on a hike, outing or picnic at a Big Sur Land Trust property, you’re not only sharing the benefits of your membership with others, you’re also helping to introduce your circle of friends and family to the Land Trust and its commitment to protect the significant lands and waters of the Central Coast for all generations.
Jane Sanders, a BSLT member since 2003, likes to take people she knows to Glen Deven Ranch. “I’ve done it several times,” she says. “The ability to go hiking on the weekend without any crowds is wonderful. There are tables and chairs and it’s a good place for a picnic. One friend I brought enjoyed it so much that she became a member of the Land Trust so that she could bring her friends to Glen Deven. It’s a great privilege to be able to go to these properties.”
Sanders has also taken college classmates to Mitteldorf, one of whom subsequently became a member.
“I’m an enthusiast,” Sanders says. “I’m very interested in land use and the preservation aspect and encourage people to join and support the Land Trust.”
For Judy Logan, who joined the Land Trust’s Board of Trustees in 2010, a Big Sur Land Trust hike was one of the first things she did after moving to the Peninsula in 1999.
“We wanted to be involved in the community,” Logan says. “Shortly after we moved here, I read about a Land Trust hike that was open to the public. After that hike we became members.”
One of Logan’s favorite places to take visitors is Point Lobos Ranch during wildflower season. “The wildflower walk is great,” she says. “It’s an absolutely beautiful property.”
In addition to introducing people to the Land Trust, Logan also encourages current members to become further involved in the Land Trust’s work.
“When people get the experience of being on the land, it’s impossible not to think about it for the future,” Logan says. “The land speaks for itself. Who does not appreciate all that has been preserved? It’s so easy to take things for granted. Every once in awhile it’s necessary to remind people that we really do have a choice.”
