To demonstrate exemplary stewardship is our goal at properties owned by Big Sur Land Trust. This standard applies to care of ecological assets and the buildings and infrastructure that make the land usable for people. We respect the natural processes of the land. And in carrying out our work, we rely on local wisdom as well as academic science.
Our stewardship initiatives range from eradication of invasive species that threaten healthy land to removing fire hazards through timber harvesting and the replenishing of native species At Arroyo Seco Ranch, we are collaborating on grazing lands research that will test holistic management concepts, with valuable insights to be gained.
Stewardship volunteers join us twice a year for a major land clean-up day; and for other projects throughout the year. Some maintenance is done through an ongoing college partnership. An added bonus: when a student construction team made repairs, cleared brush and built gates during five weeks spent at Mitteldorf and Glen Deven, they discovered the natural world for the first time, marveling at the vistas and the solitude of the forest.
