A dedicated group of volunteers recently gathered at Glen Deven Ranch to offer the beloved property a day of TLC. The house’s entryways and patios were cleaned, weeds were pulled, roses were pruned, a decorative pond was mucked out. By the end of the day, Virginia Mudd’s garden and the areas around the Ranch’s historic house glowed with care and beauty.

“This was an excellent stewardship opportunity for people who feel connected to Glen Deven,” says Todd Farrington, BSLT’s Community Affairs Manager. “The people who came to help were experienced and motivated and they just jumped right in and got to work.”

Carol Young, a longtime Land Trust member, was one of the volunteers. “We broke into little crews,” she says, “and everyone adopted certain areas. They had great tools available, so I got busy.”

Amber Sanchez Leon, Philanthropy Assistant at the Land Trust, was impressed with the volunteer crew’s work ethic. “I was so overwhelmed,” Leon says. “I’ve never seen anything like it. They were on a mission that day to do a great job, and they did.”

Paul Danielson, another volunteer and former Land Trust board member, expresses his gratitude for the day. “Glen Deven is such a treasure,” he says. “We all have a sense of investment in it. It’s important for us to contribute anything we can to keep it healthy and thriving.”

Young agrees. “The landscape of Monterey County resonates with me and I just value it so much. You can’t depend on the government to protect and take care of it. If you love something, you’ve got to get in there and do what you can, to keep what you love healthy.”

Sanchez notes that there was a sense of gratification at the end of the day. “It was a day of real community where everyone was proud to have participated,” she says. “They got the job done.”
